How America’s Gun Laws Are Failing Domestic Violence Victims

October 27, 2021

Owning a firearm makes an abuser 5x times more likely to murder a partner, yet around much of the country, gun laws are enforced on an “honor system” that relies on people who are prohibited from possessing firearms to disarm themselves. “You are trusting somebody who is not worthy of being taken at their word,” said Democratic U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, who spent seven years working as a … [Read more...]

Our Justice System Must Become More Victim-Centric

October 22, 2021

Opinion by Retired Judge Eugene M. Hyman If the pandemic has had any kind of benefit, it’s that it has raised awareness of the functions and dysfunctions of our courts and our prisons. But if the actions we’re taking to correct these problems aren’t considered thoroughly and acted on properly, the cost will likely come at the expense of children and victims of domestic violence and other violent … [Read more...]

He Beat Her Repeatedly. Family Court Tried to Give Him Joint Custody of Their Children.

September 16, 2021

Jennifer Moston was about seven months pregnant when, she said, her husband grabbed her by the arms, picked her up and threw her against the staircase. Each time she tried to get up, he pushed her down again. Such abusive episodes continued for several years, she said, until 2016, when he allegedly tried to strangle her. She went to the police and filed for divorce. It seemed obvious to … [Read more...]

Proposed Law Would Make it Tough for Abusive Parents to Get Unsupervised Visits With Their Kids

August 27, 2021

SB 654 is aimed at a problem that is sadly common. It's one of several anti-violence bills from State Sen. Dave Min. He cites the 2018 deaths of two Sacramento girls, Sophia Rouin, 12, and Sara Rouin, 9, at the hands of their abusive father during a court-ordered unsupervised visitation as inspiration for his latest piece of legislation, which would require courts to consider a parent’s history of … [Read more...]

CJE’s Mission

CJE is a nonprofit organization based in San Rafael, California. Our mission is to protect child abuse and domestic violence survivors in the U.S. family court system and to foster accountability throughout the judicial branch.

For nearly two decades, the Center has been a voice for vulnerable children and a catalyst for child safety as we work tirelessly to expose the systemic failures in U.S. family courts that are harming countless children. We accomplish this by educating the media, lawmakers, and the public about the need for significant reforms while we spearhead legislation focused on keeping children safe and alive through their parent’s divorce or separation.
